The 1974 D100 pickup used a 318-1 engine. The 318-3 was only used in motor homes and industrial applications. Cylinder displacement refers to the combined volume of the cylinders in an engine. Your motor has a total cylinder displacement of 318 cubic inches (which equals 39.75 cubic inches in each of the 8 cylinders). Other Dodge motors of that era have 273, 340, 360, 383, 400, 413, 426, and 440 cubic inch displacements. The engine's dispacement is calculated from the diameter of the cylinders and the length of the piston stroke; which is then multiplied by the number of cylinders. The engine number is the identification serial number which is stamped onto the engine block. This number can show what year the motor was built, what displacement it has, and what performance options it originally contained.
