You'd think it would be some like "Pacific Trensdetter" but it isn't. It is Chryslers designation for the platform the PT Cruiser is built on. Word has it that the PT Cruiser is built on the same platform as the Neon which is on the PL platform. The "T" in PT is for "Tall" since it is a higher profile than the Neon.

Good question. I've heard that it simply stands for "Personal Transportation" but I like the other theory I've read that it stands for "Plymouth Truck".

If you look at pics of the 30's era Plymouth trucks, there's a noticeable resemblance to the front end of the Cruiser and the old trucks.

Plymouth also made a pickup truck in the 1930s, which was, allegedly, given the nickname "PT" (as in Plymouth Truck) and since the PT Cruiser is itself a retro, it's possible someone at Chrysler wanted to make that link backwards as well.
