all wheel drive gives better traction when turning and better handling feel when in turns since all 4 wheels have power, down side is a little less gas mileage because of the extra weight of the addt'l parts. usually the mileage difference is 1-2 miles per gallon. i would recommend all wheel drive only if you live in rough terrain or snow type environments other than that you dont need it plus usually it cost 2-3k extra for this feature

A dedicated set of snow tires will give you far more safety at much less cost. Get a set mounted on steel rims and you will be MUCH safer in winter driving. The big advantage to 4WD is off road travel, not safety.
