I can think of two cars one of which beat out both of those cars in real world tests.

First-The Mazda 6 great gas mileage, relability and just fun to drive.

Second(the best)- The Ford Fusion-This car sits on the same platform as the mazda 6 but is a little more low profile and sporty. All the reports I can find rank the fusion higher than the accord and camry. Now with the new EPA gas mileage ratings the Fusion is the most realistic with the numbers on the window sticker. The others don't get what they quote.

1. The Mazda6
2. The Passat
3. The Altima
4. The Fusion

As for quality, the Passat is great. As for reliablity, the Passat is horrible.
The altima is good in both categories, but not outstanding.
The Fusion has impressive durability according to CR, but a really bland and lackluster interior, and overall poor quality. It's kinda overrated, I think... Kinda like Obama...
The Mazda6, along with the Altima, have good reliablity and quailty.

As you can see, not all vehicles that are "high quality" are also reliable. However, out of all the vehicles you and I listed, the Accord is probably the best one overall, with the Mazda in a close second. I'd stay away from the Fusion or Passat, though.
