What would be the culprit of rattling?

When I shift van into gear (either D,R,L1,L2) but not in neutral and sit in one spot with the brake pedal depressed there is an awful rattling noise. It does not occur in park or neutral with the brake depressed. The rattling seems to be causing drag on the engine as the idle will drop down. It's almost as if every drive pulley is seizing up. This does not happen if I hold brake down while in park or neutral.

The rattling can come from a variety of loose or broken components in the undercarriage. However, from your description of the problem, the most likely culprits for you to check first include broken engine or transmission mounts and loose or broken exhaust system parts. Broken mounts would allow the engine or transmission to shake and rattle parts when in gear, but quiet down when the transmission is disengaged in neutral or park. you can troubleshoot the problem by opening the hood and having a partner shift into gear and neutral back and forth while you inspect all these parts to see if there is any movement in them and track down the noise. Do not lay behind the front wheels and make sure the parking brake is firmly on when you do this! Good luck and let us know if you have any follow up questions!

I forgot to mention this occurs after vehicle has warmed up to operating temperature. Also, it is a rear wheel drive GMC Safari.
