When a deal includes a trade in you pay less sales tax in some states - what about California?

I am buying a new car and will trade in an old one - do I pay sales tax on the full purchase price of the new car or sales tax on the purchase price less the trade in value - in California? Eg if the new car price is $20,000 the trade in is $3000 do I pay sales tax on $20,000 or the difference $17000?
thanks

In California you pay tax on the full price. California, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan allow no deductions for trade-ins when calculating sales tax
