When buying new, should the tax be calculated on the price of the car before the manufacturer's rebate is applied?

Should tax be calculated on the pice of a new car before or after a manufacturer's rebate is applied?

depends on your state.

some states consider the rebates a factory discount, and collect taxes after the rebate is applied.

some states consider the rebates customer cash down, and collect taxes before the rebate is applied.
