Why would my 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue smoke white out the tailpipe?

The car has 78,000 miles when we got it. It sat up for a year. We had an oil change and changed spark plugs and wires, fuel filter and air filter. We put stop leak stuff in oil cause two days after oil change the low oil light came on.

The service engine light is still on after tune up and the mechanic says we need new motor and one says it could be oil rings or air intake. One says fuel injector and one says it could not be rings cause it does not run hot and only 78,000 miles. What is most likely?

First of all I've never been a fan of those oil stop leak products, if possible try not to use them. Its rare for a 78K mile engine to have bad piston rings but I have seen in. As to why you are being told all different causes, I have to ask if the mechanic ran a computer diagnostic. Also how is the car running? is it stalling? rough Idle? backfiring? How does the white smoke smell like? does it have a sweet smell to it? Honestly it could be many things, the more information you can give helps pinpoint the problem. also if your vehicle was store for a year and never turned on or had fuel stabalizer add to the fresh gasoline, that could also give u that problem. I had an issue like that with a 96 saturn SL1, it was an old lady, she had only put on 900 miles from her last visit over a year ago. white smoke issue was main complaint, her spark plugs/cables were good. I cleaned the tank and cleaned the injectors. after running it for about 2 miles it cleaned up. Whenever performing a fuel injector cleaning, its best to T into the fuel rail. dont waste your money with these so called fuel injectors cleaning that is performed thru a vacum hose, these dont do much simply because its mixing with the air and fuel. the best method is to T into the fuel rail and run it off the cleaner solvent itself and not with the fuel.

Try and find out what code is coming on (you find this out with a scanner). A good mechanic knows how to search for an answer and not hit and miss as most call it.

You don't say which engine you have but the 3.8L V6's in these cars were notorious for blown intake manifold gaskets. Coolant in the engine equals white smoke.

"The 3.8-liter V6 may leak coolant into the engine from the intake manifold. A new gasket kit, revised throttle body nuts, and sealing compound is available. Redesigned manifolds are also available in the aftermarket. (1998-2002)"

Sounds like what your mechanic is saying.
