There have been a series of TSBs about the VCT problem; they have been revised several times, and they try real hard to stress that these engines have some noises which are considered normal. There is a definitive test that they want done to determine whether this is a VCT problem. First of all; they want you to be using a 5W-20 synthetic blend motor oil, and a good quality oil filter which has been changed at recommended intervals. According to the TSB; if the noise is loud at idle when the oil is at full operating temperature; and the noise goes away when the engine speed is raised above 1200RPM; then it is a VCT noise. In that case; they will replace the cam phaser. Another noise which is covered under this TSB (#06-19-8) is a rattle which lasts about 1-3 seconds at startup. If the rattle does not go away after startup; it is not a VCT noise.
To have this corrected; take the truck to a Ford dealership ans tell them that you have a noise which you believe is a VCT noise. Also print this file, and show it to them: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/Dow
