This sounds like the ignition system is not delivering enough power to the spark plugs to ignite the fuel, after the rich starting assist mixture cuts back. The way to address this is to replace the spark plugs and plug wires. If your car has the 2.2 liter 4 cylinder motor; I recommend using either Champion #9402 or Champion #7020 spark plugs; and either Bosch #09374, or BWD/Niehoff #CH74156 or BWD/Niehoff #CH74156F plug wires.

If your car has the 3.1 liter V-6; I recommend using Autolite #XP606 spark plugs; and Bosch #09780 plug wires.
