Why are coupes more expensive than (4-door) sedans?

One would think that because of the extra cost of two extra-doors, in addition to the higher demand, 4-door sedans would be more expensive than the fairly impractical 2-door coupe.
But I was surprised when I read Edmunds' M3 test yesterday and it said "One could argue that even the base price of $57,275 for a 2008 BMW M3 coupe is not horrendous considering the car's extraordinary specifications. (The sedan is $3,300 cheaper.)"....
It's even more surprising in the coupe's case because both coupe and sedan will have the same equipment levels and the same performance/handling, and the sedan looks way better. (The E9x coupes are ugly, unlike the E46 coupes.)

So the question is, why is the coupe more expensive?

The reason sedans cost less is the higher demand. Although the sedan may cost more to build the engineering and tooling costs get spread over a larger base.

Coupes are more appealing to bold middle aged males with hefty bank accounts. They have a sportier more athletic look.

The 2 door coupe is more esthetically appealing and probably with a higher demand, I'm fixing to buy an '06 M3 coupe. That said I believe that the Coupe because of its longer door, meaning a longer unsupported beam, requires a stiffer chasis to compensate, probably more welds and more steel in key areas as the handling of these high performance cars relies on extremely stiff chasis. Meaning that manufacturing would be higher in cost.
