Why does my truck continue to turn over when the key is in my pocket?

I have a 2004 f350 with 6.0 power stroke. It has been sitting about 3 weeks and the weather has been sub zero at night. I tried to start it and the battery was drained. I hooked up my charger. When I tried to start it, it turned over but no start. I took the key out but the starter still was engaged. I had to disconnect both batteries. Now, when I put the battery cables on, the starter tries to start the truck. The key is in my pocket. Any help?

Normally, when you turn the key, it energizes a big relay on the starter which is called a solenoid. When that solenoid is energized, it makes a connection....connecting the battery to the starter motor. The motor spins, the gear engages flywheel of the engine and begins to turn the engine.

If the starter motor is engaged without the key in the ignition, then your solenoid is stuck engaged. That is allowing the battery voltage to turn over the starter motor.

The starter motor and solenoid are normally purchased together. You'll have to replace it.

Starters can be bench tested, but check to make sure the small iginition wire on the solenoid is not touching the positive battery cable there. Also the starter relay could be stuck closed.
