engine stalls after car is run for awhile, stalls when put in gear, runs real rough .comes out of it after awhile

Hi, my 1991 cosica starts and runs great but after awhile the temp gauge will go high and it will start running real rough. if you can floor it for a little bit it will come out of it, if you have to stop it will stall. the engine will start back up but will run rough,if you put it in gear it will stall.after it sits for about 15 min. you can get it in gear and go but it is still rough 'till you floor it,then it seems to get a burst of fuel and goes like nothing ever happened . Thanks for any help you can give.

Are you sure your temp gauge is correct?
Check your coolant. It might not exactly be the problem your posting about but it's something to look into.

After you floor it, how long will it run like normal before the symptoms start showing again?
If it only works smoothly when flooring, perhaps you should try to clean your injectors.

Check and make sure all the sensors for the incoming air are clean, like the MAF sensor, which should be between the air filter box and throttle body.

If there is a direct relationship between the gauge showing hot and the engine starting to run rough, I would check for a head gasket leak as well as the other suggestions given here. Sometimes you can just pull out the spark plugs and if you see coolant on the tips of the plugs, that's the bad news. You can also check for combustion gases in the coolant. Sometimes to see the coolant on the spark plugs you have to pressurize the cooling system with a pump.

Also check your Idle Air Controller.
