First of all, there was no 1997 Sebring made with a 3.5 V-6. But there was a 2.5 V-6 available in that year. However, there was one model of the 2007 Sebring, called a Limited, which was available with a 3.5 V-6.
If you have a 2007 Sebring Limited 3.5 V-6; it is still under warranty, so the car should be taken to the dealer to get the noise repaired at no charge.
If you have a 1997 Sebring with a 2.5 V-6, the noise could come from several different sources: A ticking which did not change in volume when you accelerate or slow down would probably come from either a faulty hydraulic valve lifter, a defective set of spark plug cables, or a bad distributor cap or rotor. It also might possibly come from a broken piston skirt or broken piston ring.
A ticking which became louder when you accelerate, and quieted or stopped when you took your foot off the gas pedal could come from a defective detonation (ignition knock) sensor, or a bad rod bearing or main bearing.
An experienced mechanic with a stethescope would be able to narrow down the number of possible causes; by listening to the sound coming from various parts of the engine.
