"gets hot" means the temp. gauge. the engine will still start up but will run rough .

if you are on the road and you can floor it for a little bit it will come out of it. when it does you will feel it . it's like it gets an extra boost of fuel and then it runs like nothing ever happend.

When it is overheating, the metal is expanding and creating too much friction internal to the engine. In effect, it is binding up.

You need to find and solve the cause of the overheating.

"gets hot means the temp. gauge" I am going to assume this means it is above normal operating temp and not just warmed up. First things first, why is it overheating? Is there enough coolent in the system, is there a coolent leak, is the thermostat stuck closed, is the electric fan operating, are the upper and lower radiator hoses both getting warm, is there compression from the engine getting in the cooling system, is the heater working, how is the oil pressure? The rough runing and hesitation are probably a result of the overheating. If "gets hot means the temp gage" means normal operation temp, we can look in other areas, let us know model make and year
