i was able to put my car into 1st gear with the engine off, and it moved with no problem
how and where to check tranny fluid

Your clutch MASTER cylinder should be on the firewall, to the right (YOUR right) of the brake master cylinder. The reservoir should be opaque plastic and the fluid level should be visible.
