Generally speaking Mercedes usually ends up ranking lower the BMW, but not dramatically lower.

Probably, if you even have any troubles at all, they will be electrical in nature, as this seems to be the German car's nemesis. Both cars are expensive to repair if you don't do any of your own work.

The 2005 Mercedes E320 is more relaible than the 5-Series. The 5-Series is a hugely overrated car. Everybody I know who owns a 2004 or newer 5-Series isn't happy with it. The people who have E-Classes like them, but the Infiniti M35 is much better than either car. I know lots of people who have M35's and they love them. The M35 is more relaible, better too drive and nicer to travel in than the BMW or Merc. The biggest problem with the 5 series is the I-Drive which is annoying to use and it doesn't always work in the cold, which means all the electronic comfort features don't work, radio, heat, AC, and Navigation system.

Neither the 5-Series nor the E-Class is very reliable, but the E-Class is a simpler car and has less to go wrong. The BMW's I-Drive has a habit of not working in cold weather but the E-Class doesn't use an I-Drive or something like it. As far as I know the E-Class is less expensive to repair.
