"output side" But could it be any thing other than the instrument panel cluster than?

It is the output side "the speedometer" then because the cruise control will maintain the Trucks speed even when the Speedo reads zero if I had the cruise set before hand before it goes wacko that is. But could it be any thing other than the instrument panel cluster than? I've had 5 new ones put in, in the last month with no improvements that is what is driving me nuts.

Well your symptoms point to the outputside..... speedometer, but you've replaced it 5 times with the same symptoms.

I'd probably look then at the connectors and wiring between the ECM and speedo, and possibly re-seat the connectors. You might also look to check that any grounds are tight (although I think you'd have other problems as well). If you don't find a problem here you are potentially looking at replacing the ECM or software load.

Is this still under warranty by any chance? If not, before biting the bullet on a ECM I'd look up whether there were any TSB's or recalls that you could maybe fall back on. You may also want to consider replacing the cheaper speed sensor as well, before the ECM.....even though your cruise control working would lead you to believe that it's okay.

Is it safe to assume that the shop that has swapped out the speedo 5 times, has checked for any error codes? (like slow or high speed communication failures)

You might also check what sensors are sending speed information to the ECM computer.
