remove scratches in hood?
Was washing, car (black exterior), grit must have been in wash cloth, very thin white scratches left behind.

If it's just in the clear coat, a professional buffing should get rid of them. If you scratched down to the primer, that's it, no solution but a repaint. Don't use a buffer yourself unless you know what you're doing. Black paint is a bit trickier than other colors.

There are various polishes that will probably get the scratches out. A machine would be much better than trying to get them out by hand... but as mr shiftright said, you need to make sure that you know what you are doing. In the future, you might want to use two buckets to wash your car. One with the soap and one for rinsing the cloth. With a good microfiber or sheep skin wash mitt/cloth, the dirt should come off in the rinse water and the soap water will remain clean.
