You need to take it somewhere to have the computer read to tell you the error code. The error code will point to the area of concern. You can usually get this done free at an autoparts chain (autozone, pepboys, etc).
Running this car for 6 months, runs the risk of severely damaging other parts, costing a lot. Some simple problem gone unrepaired, could end up costing you a significant amount of money in other damage. I'd get it fixed soon.
