xterritapart	'05 Nissan Xterra oil gauge acting like a tachometer. Bypass stuck. Is there a workaround? The oil gauge is actually goes up when I accelerate, back to normal on idle. My mechanic tells me there's a bypass release valve that is stuck. He changed the oil (which was thick) and added a detergent to help the valve release. I've been driving it now for about 4 days without much change. I'm wondering if there's any other work around. Estimate for replacing is $1,500. Please advise. Thank you!

Sounds like your mechanic's got the right idea. Unfortunately, once gummed up it may require disassembly/cleaning or replacement to fix. I have no idea what that should cost. How many miles since the prior oil change?
